 January 31, 2025

We made it to the last day of January...that was a long year  (haha)

Our Eagles have laid 3 eggs and we are watching them daily and learning about how they care for their eggs.

In Science, we are finishing up our study of winter and animals that hibernate, adapt and migrate. We will be moving on to Energy and learning how things move.

In math, we are learning about number bonds and fact families.

February is a busy month! It will be 100's day, Teachers convention, Family Day and we will be focusing on the topic of kindness.

Stay warm this weekend - It's going to be cold next week.

Cheers, Tracey

 January 24th

Hello! It's still January - I feel like it's been January for a very long time because we have accomplished so much this month and the kids are "levelling up" as I told them today.

We have been doing dictation practice every Friday which is a new skill. They have to listen to me say a word and write it down. They write 2 sight (heart) words that we have learned in class and 2 new words that relate to the phonics rules we have been learning. Then they need to write a short (5-6 word) sentence that combines those skills.

We have time with our buddies today to do some robot coding. They coded some "dot and dashes" and were all successful. Please ask your child what they taught their robot to do!

We have also been learning about animal life cycles and have been watching a live bald eagle camera and we have some EXCITING news! Jackie (the female eagle) laid her FIRST egg on Wednesday!!!! She may lay another one on Saturday or Sunday.

 January 17th

It was a busy week of learning!

In math, I introduced subtraction so we've been describing it as taking away a part of a bigger number. And it always helps to use food questions like "Sam had 10 cookies. He ate 3. How many cookies are left? Please practice with your child at home so they become fluent with their mental subtraction from 20.

In literacy we have been learning about digraphs. The letter combinations "sh" "th" and "ch" were introduced this week. Please work on these sounds with your children at home as well.

In Science, we have been learning about the season of Winter as well as hibernation, migration and adaptation. We will be completing an art project this coming week around those new vocabulary words.

We finished up our Minecraft self portrait with our buddies today and they went home.

Homework for the week is to read 10 minutes everyday :)

Have a great weekend and stay warm!

 January 10th

Hello and welcome back! We survived the first week back! I'm so glad the weather has been warm enough that we've been able to go outside.

We have levelled up in grade one and will now be working on more complex phonics rules and more difficult reading passages. The kids are working on becoming better writers and we are focussing on sentence conventions.

In math we will be working on word problems and will be learning subtraction from 20 using all of our previously learned strategies.

In buddies today we had the kids complete self portraits as minecraft characters! It was such a fun activity and the kids did really well with the assignment.

Hope you all have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday!
